My other not-so-little project

By Jay Smallat 7:53 am 6/20/2006

Since Jack Lail brought it up first, now I'll mention the Evansville launch wasn't the only big deal in Scripps land in recent days.

We also launched an experimental site focused on live music and nightlife in Knoxville, called Knoxville520. It uses Planet Discover search technology and attempts to harvest the creative energies of one Sara Schwabe, site boss, and more than one ambitious intern.

My contributions so far have been focused on getting the site architecture in place among vendors and our own systems. Much work remains on bug-squashing, boy howdy! But I also found time to make occasional completely information-free blog posts about, among other things, obscure superheroes.

Couldn't help but notice there's no reference anywhere on the site to Scripps or KNS. Must be intentional, but why?

The target crowd for 520 is maybe a generation younger than the known audience for the newspaper, and by association, the Scripps lighthouse.

Obviously, it's possible for anyone with Net skills to learn who's behind the site. But we wanted to distance ourselves from the established local Scripps brands, and have people run the site who are not established Scripps journos. That way, we hope, the target crowd will feel the site reflects the things they want to know, see and do -- not what 40-somethings like me think they want to know, see and do.

Smart.
